HOME TO GENEVA WHERE SOME OF THE MOST UNIQUE TIMEPIECES THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN, WE REALLY LOVE MB & F. FOUNDED BY MAXIMILIAN BUSSER, A MASTER IN THE FIELD OF MICRO-TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING, THE COMPANY IS A COLLECTION OF FRIENDS AND DESIGNERS WHO COME TOGETHER TO MAKE SOME OF THE MOST INTERESTING AND AESTHETICALLY UNIQUE PIECES ON THE WATCH MARKET. MAXIMILIAN BUSSER & FRIENDS (MB&F) REFER TO THEIR CREATIONS AS ‘HOROLOGICAL MACHINES’, SEEING THAT WATCH IS MADE TO TELL THE TIME AND IN EACH OF THE COMPANIES’ DESIGNS ARE INFACT A MINIATURE MECHANICAL SCULPTURE BASED ON THE FUNCTION OF A TIME PIECE.
This directive continues to this day, as the creation of a collective of professionals and designers from all over the globe, who every year, will design and craft a radical and ultimately original horological masterpiece. MB & F’s horlogical machines are the result of the synergy between these people to make a force of creativity that is so much greater than the sum of its individual companions.
‘MB&F is above all human adventure….a human adventure with just one goal; to create incredible horological machines.’ – mbandf.com
However, while everything the group creates is a masterpieces, we do of course, have our favourites.
LEGACY MACHINE 101
The name says it all, MB&F’s classically inspired 40mm wristwatch, this machine embodies the ideology of a personal time piece, taking the mainspring and making it the centrepiece of the dial. The mainspring, which is responsible for the watches precision and time keeping, cover the face and shows when it needs to be wound, the hovering disc accentuated through the miracle of the sapphire face which makes the dial look like it is totally open. The finest movement developed totally in house at MB&F ‘legacy 101’ is as much a theme as a statement for this horological machine.
HOROLOGICAL MACHINE No.6 – SPACE PIRATE
Very rarely do the worlds of science and luxury cross paths and we can leave it to MB&F to be the group that melds these two worlds into something of such functional beauty and unique aesthetic.
The machine’s aeronautic grade titanium biomorphic case, holds a sapphire globe in each corner and at it’s centre, allowing the time to be read, but also allows a glimpse into the inner mechanism of the device. The 60-second flying tourbillion, is the precision regulator of the ‘Space Pirate’ and can be seen through the central dome, which can be protecting from uv rays (which damage the lubricating oils), with a sci-fi retractable shield operated from the crown. The devices looks as technical as its 475 components, winding mechanism and platinum 950 winding battle-axe rotor, all visible through the watches back.
The horological machine is one of the most aesthetically unique pieces on the market, based on its Japanese manga space ship inspiration, as well as it’s limited creation, with only 100 movements ever being made.
HOROLOGICAL MACHINE No.4 – THUNDERBOLT
The most iconic and instantly recognisable piece that MB&F has constructed, the Horological Machine No.4, Thunderbolt, inspired by Maximillan’s childhood love of model planes, the Thunderbolt is a watch with an anarchist calibre towards the wristwatch ideology.
The sleek and aerodynamic shape is carved in lightweight aircraft grade titanium. With the heart of a plane and with each of the 300+ components developed specifically for this piece, the watches movement defies what you would expect from a wristwatch as only an MB&F machine can do. It’s sapphire face, movement window and separated hours and minutes and ‘power reserve’ dial, make this one of the groups most unique and timeless designs. Every curve and line acts in poetic harmony with the other, with not a single superfluous component, its beauty is matched only by its comfort.
The definition of MB&F patented ‘horological machine’ title, the Starfleet Machine, is a work of chronological magnificence that epitomises the MB&F approach to the world and craft of time keeping.
Engineering by L’Epee 1939, Switzerland’s only remaining high-end clock manufacturer, the machine is quite obviously based around the sci-fi aesthetics of a intergalactic spaceship, with the heart and function of a clock. The machines highly visible motion was in-house finished by MB&F and the devices boosts a 40 day power reserve which is displayed by the dials. With ‘laser cannons’ marking off time and hand polished ‘radar dishes’ turning for hours, minutes, seconds and ‘power reserve’, the space ship aesthetics provides an eye catching visual animation.
Boldly going where no clock designer has gone before, the MB&F Starfleet machine is the physical embodiment of one of the most exciting names in the world of haute horology.
