10 WAYS TO DO WHISKEY LIKE GENTRY

GENTLEMEN AND LADIES ALIKE SHOULD KNOW AND APPRECIATE WHISKEY EVEN IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT. MUCH LIKE CIGARS, WHISKEY IS A PRODUCT THAT IS STEPPED IN CULTURE, HISTORY AND CRAFT, NO MATTER ITS ORIGIN.

THE ICE SPHERE

AVAILABLE FROM: JOHN LEWIS – £10

For years the ice sphere was a highly sort after skill originating in japan, where master mixologist perfected the technique of shaking a cube of ice in an ice shaker in a highly precise manner that would erode the cube into a perfect sphere. Now however, there are many ice moulds on the market for you to do this at home and after a few seconds in the drink, there is no evidence that it come out of a mould. Apart from simply looking cool, the ice ball keeps your drink colder longer and doesn’t melt as much as smaller cubes, making it an ideal choice those whisky drinkers who like the cold but don’t want to damage the taste of the whiskey, rightly so!

THE WHISKY STONES

AVAILABLE FROM: JOHN LEWIS – £22.50

Whiskey cubes are made from various materials, but the principal is the same. These cubes are frozen in your freezer at home and then placed in the drink, keeping your whiskey (or whatever) nice and cold without any dilution whatsoever. Various sizes are available with larger varieties keeping the drink colder for longer. However, although they do look rather cool, they do make quiet a noise in the glass and if your going to refill the glass again, you will need to change the cubes over, which does not look good when hosting. In comparison to the above mentioned ice ball, these cubes may be easier to manage, but the ball most definitely lasts longer in your drink and keeps it chilled for longer.

THE WHISKEY WEDGE

AVAILABLE FROM: CORKCICLE – $29.95 USD

Another option for cooling your drink, the whiskey wedge cube glass in a new accessory on the scene, probably because it is limited to only being properly used in one glass. It does however look incredibly interesting and we imagine drastically reduces dilution while keeping the drink cold for a long while. I’m sure we will be looking forward to a personal in depth analysis of which works better in due course.

THE AERATOR

AVAILABLE FROM: SELFRIDGES – £39

Whiskey, like wine, sometimes needs to be fed oxygen in order for the full flavours to come out, especially if it’s that little bit older or that little bit smokier. The Vinturi aerator is a must have accessory and specially designed to measure the right air to liquid ratio as it is poured through, allowing you to get the most out of your whisky from the first sip all the way to the last. In comparison to the one speed wine aerator, the spirit variety allows you to also measure jiggers before letting the liquid flow through and into the drink, which means as much as we like it for whiskey, we love it for cocktails as well.

THE ROLLING GLASS

AVAILABLE FROM: JOHN LEWIS – £20

Much like the aerator but on a lesser degree, the rolling glass was designed to aerate the spirit. As the glass rolls on the table, the spirit’s viscosity coats the inside of the glass, allowing more of the spirit access to the oxygen and to grow in flavour. Apart from its design function, the rolling glass is a great looking accessory and a huge hit if you are the kind of gentleman who hosts whiskey nights. When combined with the ice ball the effect is even greater and the glass moves more.

THE BOTTLE COASTER

AVAILABLE FROM: HARRODS – £179

If you are going to simply display your bottle as a matter of pride, pleasure or conversation, you can add a little bit of elegance and know how with a bottle coaster. Ideally made for wine bottles, it works for whiskey just as well and will protect that wooden table from marks and bruises.

THE ICE BUCKET

AVAILABLE FROM: DAVID LINLEY – £497.50

Never for cubes, only cracked ice. The ice bucket only works when filled with hand cracked ice, for a 1920’s aesthetic. Diamond cut or a luxury metal one makes no difference, as its keep the ice cold, the part going and looks the part. If you’re the kind of person who drinks whiskey on the go, an ice bucket is an essential for you and everyone will be glad you brought it on those hot summer days.

THE DECANTER

AVAILABLE FROM: DAVID LINLEY – £475

Whether it’s for presentation or modesty the decanter is an essential for those who care about either. When a gentleman buys an expensive whisky it is poor form to simply display it in the open, a decanter is the mark of a modest man who is never the less generous with his libations. IF the bottle was simply for personal consumption you can hide it away, however, if you enjoy the finer things in life and enjoy sharing them with friends, a decanter is the gentleman’s whiskey accessory and can make for a more elegant and beautiful home bar.

THE GLOBE BAR

AVAILABLE FROM: €998 – ZOFFOLI

The ultimate man cave furnishing for gents. The globe bar is that piece every traditionalist wants in their home bar or office. An antiquated idea that nevertheless less adds a touch of modern elegance to the room, a good globe top spirit cabinet is something that should always be sought after. Apart from the actual globe itself there are many on the market to suit tastes and interior decorating styles, from antique to modern in appearance. You’ve seen them in a hundred movies and it’s the kind of thing you always thought was just so cool. We know because we thought it too.
